Home Remedies for Chapped Lips (Cheilitis)

Dry, cracked and itchy lips are called chapped lips which are caused by cold or dry weather, sun damage, dehydration allergies and frequently licking. The skin on lips is more sensitive to the wind, heat, and cold, than the skin on other parts of your body. Here are some natural home remedies to treat cracked lips but consult a skin specialist if you develop bleeding cracks and sores.

Home Remedies:

Ghee and butter, both are a staple of our kitchen and are highly beneficial for skin. Fatty acids present in Ghee/ Butter help to condition and nourish dry & chapped lips. Apply ghee or butter as it is to your lips, massage, and leave it on.

Milk: The lactic acid in milk helps to exfoliate and wash away the dead skin from your lips. Also milk work to supply your lips and skin with the lost nutrition, leaving it soft, hydrated and beautiful.

Coconut oil is an emollient that not only moisturizes the skin but acts as an antiseptic also. The lauric acid in coconut oil has nourishing properties that seep into your skin. Apply and massage your lips with this oil any time of the day.

Aloe vera has cooling effects and is best as a home remedy for sunburns. Apply fresh aloe vera gel to your lips and wash off after 15 minutes. Limit the use of aloe vera to just two or three times per day.

Avocado butter:  It is non-greasy and is well-absorbed by the skin. Avocado butter soothes lips and increase collagen production. Buy organic avocado butter or make your own at home using organic avocados and any carrier oil.

Cocoa Butter is ultra-moisturizing and coats a hydrating layer on lips, also helps in quick healing. Take a pea-sized amount of Cocoa Butter and mix with 1 drop of coconut oil. Apply this paste on your lips and leave it overnight to sink in.

Cucumber Juice: Cucumber is known to have hydrating properties and a great remedy to D-tan. Rub cucumber juice or slice gently on your lips for a minute or two. Cucumber is beneficial for health as well as skin.

Rose Petals: We use Rose water very commonly in skin care products due to its anti-inflammatory properties. Rose petals leaves your lips red, soft and plump. Either cleanse your lips with rose water or make a paste with rose petals and apply as lip mask.

Exfoliation helps to get rid of dead cells & flaky skin from your lips at the same time restore softness and smoothness speeding up the healing process.
Mix Sugar or Sea Salt with Honey or Oil
Add Brown Sugar with 2 drops of Olive Oil and 1 tablespoon of Honey too
Mix Coffee with Oil or Honey
Scrub very gently without irritating your lips and wash off and apply some lip balm.

Petroleum jelly: Vaseline seals in the water longer than oils and waxes. It’s also inexpensive and easy to find online or in drugstores. Use it as a lip balm every time you feel dry lips and also include it in your s routine.

Use non-irritating lip-balm or lipstick.
Aways check expiry date of your cosmetics.
Avoid Ingredients while your lips are chapped: Camphor, Eucalyptus, Lanolin, Fragrance and Flavoring: Cinnamon, citrus, mint, and peppermint.
Ingredients that can help heal chapped lips: Castor seed oil, Ceramides, Dimethicone, Hemp seed oil, Mineral oil, Petrolatum & Shea butter.
