Home based remedies for Diarrhea.

Loose and watery stool that occurs more frequently than usual. It can be caused by stomach or viral infection, contaminated or intolerant food, and maybe due to anxiety or stress. Loose motions are mostly accompanied by stomach (abdominal) aches and sometimes vomits if it’s due to food. There are many effective home remedies to control and treat loose motions at home.

Home Remedies

Stay hydrated – Drink lots and lots of water to replace the fluid loss. Coconut water, juices, fruits (watermelons, oranges, cucumbers, pineapples) will help.

ORS – Oral Rehydration Solution contains salt and glucose, which is the most recommended drink during diarrhea. It is available in the market and can be prepared easily at home.

Probiotics – Probiotics are known to provide us with good bacteria which are of utmost for stomach recovery. Eat aged soft cheeses, beet, kvass, cottage cheese, dark chocolate, green olives kefir, kimchi, kombucha, Sauerkraut, miso, natto, pickles, sourdough bread, tempeh, and most important yogurt.

BRAT Diet – Take bananas, white rice, applesauce, and toast as a meal to firm your stools. Eat low fiber food which are easy to digest and feels lighter.

Heating pad – The warmth will distract your mind from cramps or pain, relax your muscles and reduce your nausea. Makes sleeping easier for you.

Herbal Tea – Try Lemongrass tea, chamomile tea, peppermint tea & ginger tea to heal. Add mint with lime juice and honey. Having it 3 times a day will do the wonders.

Not to Eat – Avoid greasy, fried and junk food during loosemotions. Cut down on alcohol, milk, soda, and other carbonated or caffeinated drinks.

Diarrhea in breastfed babies is mostly due to any change in the mother’s diet so she needs to monitor her diet.

Eating healthy and hygienic food will reduce the chances of catching diarrhea, also wash & sanitize your hands before meals. Make a habit to wash fruits and vegetables before eating and cooking. Avoid market food as much as you can and mostly consume seasonal fruits and veggies.
